Forest Wedding | Sally and April

February 14, 2020

Having a forest wedding is an exciting and invigorating way to celebrate the start of your new life together. Sally and April’s forest wedding out by Issac’s Ridge in Canberra was intimate, stunning and so, so atmospheric. Just a quick side note that this was also published in Polka Dot Bride!

Issac’s Ridge is one of Canberra’s beautiful forest fragments which litter the capital territory. Filled to the brim with tall pine trees, views, and dirt bike tracks, it provides an incredible backdrop for any nature-based portrait session.

I’d met Sally previously when doing Stephany and Mikaela’s wedding back in October 2018. Sally was actually the celebrant at their wedding! Sally loved the vibe of how I worked so wanted to see if I was free to capture her very own wedding back in May 2019! I was totally stoked and was even more excited to learn more and more about her personal life and her partner, April.

Early in 2019, we spent a Saturday morning meeting up over breakfast and a stroll around Issac’s Ridge. We had a wander around, and Sally and April very kindly showed me their neat van and even cooked me breakfast!

Sally and April were looking for a relaxed and personal vibe in their day. I think you’ll immediately get that vibe when you have a look at the below images. To get this vibe, the plan for the day to have a relaxed forest wedding ceremony in the afternoon, and then dinner cooked together back at Sally and April’s place.

When it came to planning the day, Sally, April and I walked through a rough plan and what the best way to have the ceremony would be in terms of placement. Having the guests up the top while Sally and April were below would create a beautiful ‘amphitheatre’ vibe to the procession, with Sally being led with her parents walking through the crowd.

One of the biggest challenges we had in the day was waiting to see what the rain was going to do. It was actually raining all day on their big day; however, there was a small pocket where the storm subsided, and we rushed out to the ceremony site!

I think you’ll enjoy looking at the steam and atmosphere that this created at the start of the day! It’s moments like this, where the weather rolls in which makes forest weddings even better!

Because of how Sally and April wanted their day to be relaxed, they were together throughout the whole day, except for when the ceremony started, to have that little bit of a surprise! I love it when couples approach their day with a much more relaxed attitude; it always becomes a lot more fun, and much less stressful.

The details of the day which stood out for me was the absolutely beautiful and natural colour palette Sally and April chose to dress in, and of course the forest setting that the ceremony was done in. Forest weddings allow you to have such a unique experience in a location that hardly anyone would experience in the same way.

Taking Sally and April aside towards the end of the day to have their couples was a brief but fun session. These two have such a relaxed and close connection that you can feel how comfortable they are around each other.

There were so many great moments, but I’d have to say my most favourite part of the whole day was listening to Sally and April’s vows to each other. Written down on beautiful paper, and tucked away, the words really did mean so much to hear from these two incredible souls.
